bo diddley

Blues legend Bo Diddley played a very unusual guitar. It didn’t look like other guitars that you’d find in a guitar shop; he built his own out of a box and some strings that he found when he was young because he didn’t have any money. His nickname could have come from a Diddley Bo, which was a string nailed to a piece of wood and played like a slide guitar.

After he became famous and earned a lot of money, he worked with a guitar-maker to create guitars that were shaped like the one he made when he was young. The first famous rectangular guitar to be manufactured was called The Twang Machine.

My students got to make their very own Twang Machines, using construction paper, stickers, glue, and crayons. I cut black construction paper into strips to become the neck, and they chose their favorite color of 9×12 construction paper to become the body of the guitar. They glued the neck to the body, drew strings, knobs, and decorations, adding stickers as a finishing touch.
